Scotch whisky’s global success

For some, Scotch whisky is the very essence of Scotland, rich in history, craftmanship and culture. It’s no wonder that it’s such a booming export taking foreign markets by storm.

Last year Scotch whisky exports were worth £4.7 billion, with more than a billion bottles sent overseas. These considerable sales made up 70 per cent of Scotland’s total food and drink exports, and 21 per cent of the UK’s as a whole.

Discounts drive retail boost

Retail sales increased in October thanks to bigger discounts being offered by stores, this being an attempt to entice back disengaged shoppers. As a result total sales increased by 0.6 per cent, the best performance since April.

British Retail Consortium Chief Executive Helen Dickinson commented on retailers’ extraordinary efforts, saying: “Fashion shops were particularly active, helping non-food return to growth for the first time since July.”
