British bike exports soar
UK exports of bikes, parts and accessories grew by 15% in the year to March 2020, worth £173.2 million. Europe, Australia and the US lead the demand for cycling goods.
International Trade Secretary, Liz Truss, said: “With more people turning to two wheels for their commute and leisure, UK cycling’s success on the road and track is translating into increasing business success.”
The British cycling industry is renowned because of its manufacturing heritage and success in the sport. British bike manufacturers can expect demand to continue and soar in the future.See more
UK and Japan start trade negotiations
On Tuesday 9 June, the UK and Japanese governments started negotiating a UK-Japan Free Trade Agreement. The agreement will build on the existing EU-Japan deal.
The new Free Trade Agreement will go further by obtaining benefits in areas such as digital trade and setting new standards around digital technology and e-commerce.
Last year, UK trade with Japan was worth over £30 billion and 9,500 UK based businesses exported goods to the country, employing 2.4 million people across the UK.Read more
UK luxury bag retailer, Rutherfords, sees success in Japan
Handmade in the grounds of the Cholmondeley Castle in Cheshire, Rutherfords’ made-to-order leather bags are experiencing unprecedented demand. The business has recorded a 400% increase in sales since last year.
Incredibly, 70% of sales revenue is driven by the Japanese market. Rutherfords sought advice from the Department for International Trade on how to export safely during the Coronavirus pandemic.
The business created a socially distanced work environment, allowing them to fulfil orders from Japan and even enter new markets in the US and Europe.Find out more
