As we draw closer to the 31 October deadline, what position is the UK in when it comes to securing tariff-free trading? So far, the UK has agreed 13 trade continuity deals covering 38 countries including South Korea, Central America and the Pacific Islands.

The UK has also signed “mutual recognition agreements” deals with the United States, Australia and New Zealand. The US agreement will particularly benefit the pharmaceutical sector which accounts for around 18 per cent of UK exports to the US.

How has UK shopping changed?

A record 2,481 highstreet shops closed down in 2018, with big chains such as Toys ‘R’ Us, Maplin and Poundworld vanishing all together. In July the proportion of all shops that are empty reached 10.3 per cent, the highest level since January 2015.

The rise of online spending is one of the key reasons behind the disruption of many retailers’ business models, with consumers now spending one in every five pounds online.
