International Trade Secretary launches new Export Strategy

Last week International Trade Secretary Liam Fox set out plans to make Britain a 21st century exporting superpower. The new strategy outlines how the government will produce smarter and more tailored support to help UK companies to export.

Baroness Fairhead, Minister of State for Trade and Export Promotion at the Department of International Trade, said: “As the world’s sixth largest exporter, we do punch above our weight, however, we also punch below our potential. This Export Strategy sets out to change that and to increase exports as a proportion of GDP from 30 per cent to 35 per cent, taking us from the middle of the G7 to near the top. This is ambitious, but achievable.”

Trade relations in Africa

Theresa May is on her first visit to South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya as Prime Minister, as she focuses on renewed partnerships between the UK and Africa, looking to boost Britain’s post-Brexit trade.

During the visit the Prime Minister will discuss how Britain can work alongside African countries to help deliver important investment and jobs, as well as how to continue working together to maintain stability and security.

Theresa May said: “Africa stands right on the cusp of playing a transformative role in the global economy, and as longstanding partners this trip is a unique opportunity at a unique time for the UK to set out our ambition to work even closer together.”

Trading with the Rainbow Nation

South Africa is Africa’s most powerful country, with its stock exchange being in the world’s top 20 and is the largest in the continent. Despite a slow economy, South Africa is a middle-income emerging market, with well-developed financial, legal, communications and transport sectors. South Africa’s prospects look good, with e-commerce growing fast.

It’s also a shining example of a country that has overcome division to successfully embrace democracy and stability, and is an excellent springboard into other African markets.
