British exports hit record high
New statistics from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) show that UK firms have sold more overseas in the 2018/19 financial year than at any time since records began. Despite the uncertain global economic outlook, UK exports have been increasing for the past 36 consecutive months, an indication of the unparalleled spirit and resilience of UK exporters.
Secretary of State for International Trade, Dr Liam Fox, said: “UK exports continue to grow and beat records across Europe, these numbers highlight the quality and innovation of British goods and services and how much they are valued across the globe.”See more
Scottish shop footfall increases
Research from the Scottish Retail Consortium (SRC) and Springboard has found an increase of footfall in Scottish shops for the first time in nine months. Footfall rose by 0.7 per cent in Scotland in April, whereas the average for the UK as a whole fell by 0.5 per cent.
SRC director David Lonsdale said: “This is a more favourable set of results. The challenge will be for retailers to convert that into an enhanced performance at tills, and it appears those retail destinations which benefited from rising footfall were the ones which offered consumers a ‘day-out’ experience when shopping.”Read more
