Increase in exports lowers trade deficit

The Office for National Statistics has reported that the UK trade deficit fell to £4.5 billion in July from £5.6 billion in the previous month.

This reduction reflects a two per cent increase in exports of goods and services, and a 0.5 per cent decrease in imports.

Howard Archer, Chief UK and European Economist at IHS Global Insight, commented that the figures were more evidence of the UK economy’s current resilience, hopefully encouraging a long-term increase in exports.

E-commerce growth in Indonesia

Indonesia’s e-commerce market is now worth US $46 billion. The rapid sector growth has largely been caused by rising internet, mobile and smartphone penetration.

Online retail currently makes up 0.6 per cent of the total retail business in the region. The Indonesian E-commerce Association is aiming to increase this to a 20 per cent share in the next ten years.

The most popular e-commerce products include clothes, footwear, bags, watches, vehicle accessories, cosmetics and books.

Personalising the online shopping experience

According to research from Mindtree, around a fifth of consumers expect a more personalised customer service online versus in-store shopping.

75 per cent of shoppers surveyed believe that personalised promotions would encourage them to purchase relevant products that they might not have previously bought.

A more personal experience doesn’t just benefit the consumer though, half of organisations in Europe surveyed found that more targeted promotions have contributed to improved sales over the last 12 months.
