Spring Budget 2017 | Germany’s retail ecommerce is growing | DHL Express green urban delivery

Spring Budget 2017
Phillip Hammond delivers Spring Budget 2017
Yesterday, Chancellor of the Exchequer Phillip Hammond presented the latest Budget to Parliament.
In his review of the British economy he informed us that in 2016 our economy grew faster than Japan, France and the United States. Amidst the major advanced economies, Britain’s growth in 2016 came second only to Germany.
The focus is on keeping Britain at the “cutting edge of the global economy”, as the UK prepares for a future outside the European Union.
Our latest blog highlights the key points that will affect British businesses.

Germany’s retail ecommerce shows significant growth
A report released in February shows that overall B2C ecommerce sales in Germany grew by 12 per cent in 2016. According to the report released by Bundesverband E-Commerce und Versandhandel (bevh), sales reached a total of €66.9 billion.
As in previous years, retail ecommerce was the largest contributor to that total, up 12.5% to €52.7 billion. Other services such as digital, travel and events made up the remaining €14.2 billion.
Clothing has remained one of the best-selling product types with €11.6 billion in sales for 2016, an increase of 11.5% from the previous year. According to bevh, this year the increase in sales has been mainly driven by men with spend rising by 22.5% in 2016, outpacing a 5.9% increase in outlays on the category by women and surpassing spending gains for products such as shoes, home décor items, hobbies and leisure.
DHL Express continues to pursue green urban delivery
DHL is piloting a new City Hub concept that will enable increased use of cargo bicycles for inner-city deliveries.
John Pearson, CEO of DHL Express Europe, said “DHL Express has already replaced up to 60% of inner-city vehicle routes in some European countries with cargo bicycles, and we expect that the City Hub and Cubicycle will both help us to accelerate this approach in other markets over the next 3-5 years.”
DHL Express has introduced bicycles in more than 80 European cities in 13 European countries to date, including 14 Cubicycles in seven cities.
