8 of 10 UK-made cars now exported

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has announced that more than 5 million UK-made cars have been exported since 2010. This high rate of international demand, with 8 out of 10 cars made in the UK destined for export, is largely due to the growth of consuming classes in emerging markets, especially China.

In more promising news for the UK economy, Britain has become one of the most cost-effective places to produce goods in Western Europe according to a new Boston Consultancy Group report. Factors such as low corporate tax rates and flexible labour have played a key factor in bringing this about. This, combined with a renewed focus on exporting, can help maintain the economy’s growth.

Trading with the Americas

Covering almost one third of the world’s total land area, the Americas region is home to a wide range of promising target markets for UK businesses. The US, Britain’s largest trade partner in the Americas, continues its economic recovery – the country’s GPD expanded by 4.2 per cent in 2014 Q2; Commonwealth member Canada is also an important business destination for the UK.

But don’t forget about Central and South America: the markets of the region are becoming more open and English is increasingly widely spoken. Key markets include Brazil, Latin America’s largest economy, as well as Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Chile.
