Jeremy Corbyn visits DHL | UK goods trade gap widens | SBS Event 2016

Jeremy Corbyn visits our EMA hub for night-time operations tour

On Thursday 11 February, Labour Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn visited the DHL East Midlands Airport hub to take a behind-the-scenes look at our busy overnight operations.

The EMA hub is the second largest cargo airport in the UK with connections across Britain and the world, and the capacity to process more than 120,000 shipments each night.

During his visit, Jeremy Corbyn spoke to several of our staff and we showed him how DHL is investing in expanding the EMA hub to help us support the growing requirements of UK businesses shipping internationally.

British businesses must increase goods exports to reduce trade gap

Britain’s goods trade gap widened to £125 billion last year, the highest figure ever recorded according to the Office for National Statistics.

Whilst the UK’s services exports are at a surplus, it’s clear that British businesses need to increase their exports of goods both for their own benefit and to support the country’s overall economic growth.

In positive news, Britain’s exports of goods to countries outside the European Union increased by £3.5 billion between 2014 and 2015. This shows that businesses are increasingly looking for growth beyond the EU.

Improvement needed in exporting goods

Small Business Sunday
Small Business Sunday (SBS) event 2016

On Friday 12 February, the annual SBS event took place. Hosted by Theo Paphitis, the founder of SBS, the event is a chance for winners to network, engage with experts, and hear the latest SBS news.

SBS was created as a way to give small businesses more exposure. Each Sunday businesses can tweet Theo describing their business. On the Monday Theo retweets six of his favourite entries, raising their profiles to his almost 500,000 Twitter followers. Many businesses report sales increases as a result.

DHL is a proud sponsor of SBS and our Business Export Advisors are available to support all SBS winners – and of course other businesses – grow and succeed internationally.
