Home Italy

Rich in history and culture, but is the Italian market rich in opportunities?

Known for its food, art, fashion and literature, Italy is an attractive destination for both tourists and exporters. Italy is a major global economy; it’s the eighth largest in the world and third largest in the EU, with its economy expected to expand to US$2.26 trillion by 2023. Out of 190 nations, the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business league table ranks Italy as the 58th easiest country to trade with.

Government trade data between the UK and Italy was most recently recorded in 2018 at £44.5 billion – an increase of 3.4% from the previous year. There is demand in particular for defence, cyber security, aerospace and engineering skills, providing opportunities for British businesses in these areas.

Italy lags behind in internet adoption and e-commerce use, but it’s catching up with its European neighbours growing at an annual rate of 7.6% and user penetration is expected to reach 55.1% in 2020, growing to 67.1% in 2024. The market’s largest segment is electronics and media with a projected market volume of US$5,424m in 2020.
