Does the luck of the Irish stand for British businesses?

Ireland is the UK’s fifth largest export market and 2019 government data recorded exports at £36.6 billion. As one of our closest neighbours, Ireland’s similarities to the UK make it an attractive destination for first-time exporters, especially with Irish consumers importing more from the UK than any other country.

Ireland ranked 24th on World Bank’s 2020 Ease of Doing Business report. Home to a strong, growing economy, Ireland’s GDP growth was 5.5% in 2019 (IMF) and there are a number of sectors that are expected to grow considerably, including construction, life sciences (pharmaceuticals and medical devices), agritech and energy sector (off-shore wind and renewables).

With 71% of the population shopping online, revenue in Ireland’s e-commerce market is expected to grow at an annual growth rate of 8.6% and is projected to reach US$4,423m by 2024. Fashion is currently the leading product category in Ireland, accounting for US$1.04 billion market share, followed by Toys, Hobby and DIY, which generates US$1.01 billion in sales.
