Does the luck of the Irish stand for British businesses?

Ireland is the UK’s fifth largest export market and imports more from the UK than any other country. As one of our closest neighbours, Ireland should definitely have its place on your list of foreign markets with high export potential. Foreign trade and investment is encouraged in Ireland, with UK exports to Ireland worth £38.3 billion in 2018.

Ireland ranked 24th on World Bank’s 2020 Ease of Doing Business report. Home to a strong, growing economy, Ireland’s GDP growth was 6.8 per cent in 2018 and there are a number of sectors in Ireland that are expected to grow considerably including construction, life sciences, pharmaceuticals and medical devices. These are offering yet more opportunities for UK businesses.

Its similarities to the UK, including laws, culture and systems of finance, make Ireland an ideal market for first-time exporters. Irish businesses and consumers are very familiar with UK goods and services and view them as high quality. It’s encouraging to learn that UK companies often receive positive support from their partners in Ireland. Irish consumers spent an incredible €3 billion on overseas retailers in 2018.

Ireland’s retail sales increased by 3.7 per cent year on year in December 2018, and this trend is expected to continue at a projected growth of around 2.5 per cent until 2020. Online shopping continues to be a growing market due to the convenience of it, it’s estimated that 25 per cent of Irish consumers shop online. Given the seamless nature, the use of mobile phones in the purchasing process is on the rise in Ireland.
