SMEs “Back in the Game”: ACCA global performance review

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) recently undertook a study that highlighted positive news from SMEs. The key finding was that confidence levels for SMEs around the world have increased significantly from mid-2013 to mid-2014. While in 2012 and early 2013 SMEs were slightly behind the wider economic recovery, they are now experiencing its full benefits. Specifically, the UK instituted some of the most SME-friendly policies in the major ACCA/IMA markets during the survey period – setting a solid foundation for future growth.

So, where can Britain’s SMEs go next? To sustain this positivity, the report suggests innovation, building strong supplier relationships – and of course entering new markets.

Right on the doorstep: Trading with Europe

We’ve said before that going global is easier than you may think – and nothing illustrates this better than the proximity and ease of entry to European markets. The business environment in most countries in Europe will be familiar to British companies, and even for non-EU countries within the continent, the regulations and processes for doing business are largely similar. English is also the most widely spoken foreign language in Europe: 32 per cent of all EU citizens outside the UK speak English as a second language, so though being able to do business in another European language is useful, it’s not essential for gaining market entry.

To help you get an overview of the opportunities Europe has to offer, and develop a closer understanding of the European Union (EU), European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and other European markets such as Russia, check out our Trading with Europe and Doing Business with Europe guides.

Boost your international trade acumen with DHL’s regional guides

Our overview of trading and doing business with Europe’s markets is part of a series of guides to different parts of the world. Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Oceania – if you want to find out where in the world you should next take your business, our destination guides give solid overviews of the regions’ current and future potential for international growth. For example, the OECD predicts that Africa’s consumer-facing industries will grow by more than US $400 billion by 2020 – and Asia could contribute 50 per cent of the world’s GDP by 2050, which would reduce poverty throughout the region and give 3 billion Asians income levels equal to those of Europe today.

We also have a range of country-specific guides to each region’s key economies, from Australia to Vietnam, with key trade information. And don’t forget: the DHL Customs Support team has in-depth knowledge of the trade regulations for any of the more than 220 countries and territories to which you can export your products with DHL.
