European mobile commerce on the rise
 

According to the ING International Survey – Mobile Banking 2016, 66 per cent of mobile device owners in Europe have made a purchase using their smartphone or tablet over the last 12 months.

M-commerce was strongest in Turkey, Italy, and Poland, whilst the fastest growth of mobile shopping was in France and the Netherlands. Outside of Europe, mobile commerce also rose in the US and Australia.

50 per cent of shoppers said they would return to a store that retained their mobile payment data.

The National Australia Bank (NAB) Online Retail Sales Index has found that e-commerce sales rose to $20.1 billion during the 2015/16 financial year. This is an annual increase of 13.5 per cent, and is set to continue to grow.

“The share of total online spending is dominated by homewares and appliances, groceries and fashion – with media contributing the most in the past year,” said Alan Oster, Chief Economist at the NAB.

The report also found that around 37 per cent of all online retail sales came from smaller retailers.
