General election and trade | UK online spending | DHL Delivered

Election unlikely to have any implications on trade
Following Theresa May’s decision to call a general election for 8 June, the European Council has said the election should not have any implications on the EU’s plans to finalise negotiating its mandate at the Brexit summit on 29 April.
Chief economist at advisory group Global Counsel, Gregor Irwin, said “there are unlikely to be any implications for trade.” The election is not expected to disrupt trade negotiations as Brexit discussions will focus on modalities such as what will be discussed, when and by who.
Irwin also went on to say “while Brexit is a central issue, trade and policy will be a more marginal issue, although there may be some questions about environmental and other standards in future trade agreements.”

UK shoppers spent £1bn a week online
According to the Office of National Statistics’ Retail Sales report for March 2017, UK shoppers spent £1 billion a week online, 19.5 per cent more than they did in March 2016.
The fastest growth online came from textile, clothing and footwear stores, where ecommerce sales rose by 28.1 per cent and accounted for 15 per cent of all retail sales in the sector.
James Brooke, chief executive of Amplience, said “online sales continue to post impressive year-on-year growth.” The report also revealed that “80 per cent of all sales now have a digital touchpoint, with instore visits heavily influenced by online engagement.” This follows the trend of the modern customer: “always online and always connected.” Forward-thinking retailers know that customer engagement strategies will need to evolve and innovate as they move forward.
