Final round of Brexit talks | Meet the new Minister at DIT | Expo 2020 Dubai

Fifth round of Brexit talks get under way
As the fifth round of Brexit talks got underway in Brussels, Theresa May addressed parliament and said that the UK can “prove the doomsayers wrong.”
This will be the final time the two sides talk before EU leaders meet and decide if enough progress has been made to proceed onto post-Brexit relations with the UK, including trade. The EU summit is set to meet in a week’s time on 19 October.
Following her speech to the House of Commons, the Prime Minister met industry leading figures from Aston Martin, HSBC, Morgan Stanley and Vodafone and reassured them about the Brexit process. The government also published two White Papers, setting out how customs and trade might work after Brexit.

New Minister for Trade and Export Promotion at DIT
This week the Department for International Trade (DIT) announced that Baroness Rona Fairhead will start her role as the new Minister for Trade and Export Promotion.
As a former Business Ambassador for UK Trade and Investment with a wealth of experience in global business and economics, her responsibilities will include building strong relationships with UK exporting companies, helping smaller businesses export to the global market and overseeing the GREAT campaign.
The New Minister for Trade and Export Promotion said: “There is a huge potential for growth as UK businesses meet the global demand for their world-class goods and service; I look forward to working with businesses of all sizes so we can forge a new culture of exporting.”
Expo 2020 Dubai opportunities
Last week the International Trade Secretary, Dr Liam Fox, was welcomed in Dubai by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Expo 2020 Dubai Higher Committee. He announced the UK’s plans for Expo 2020 Dubai and added the UK planned to host a theme around ‘Opportunity’.
Dr Fox reiterated the UK’s support as he handed over the official letter of participation. The UK hosted the first ever World Expo in 1851 and has played a leading role in Expos over the past 166 years.
The UK and UAE have strong trade and investment links; around 5,000 UK businesses operate in the UAE and it is also the UK’s twelfth largest trading partner.
