Economic growth beats forecast | Business at the heart of trade | UK-Spain trade

UK economic growth exceeds forecasts
According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), in the last three months of 2017 the UK economy expanded by 0.5 per cent. Economists had initially predicted a 0.4 per cent expansion so the better-than-expected economic growth was welcomed.
Darren Morgan, Head of GDP at the ONS, said: “The boost to the economy at the end of the year came from a range of services including recruitment agencies, letting agents and office management.”
In 2017 as a whole, growth stands at 1.8 per cent compared with 1.9 per cent in 2016.

Opportunity for UK Business to influence international trade visits
International Trade Secretary, Dr Liam Fox, has responded to pressure from UK businesses to put them at the heart of trade policy and is reaching out for their input to influence issues raised during ministerial visits.
This is positive news for investors around the world as China is a key driver of the global economy, the latest growth is China’s highest in two years, and largely due to stronger exports and another push from a government infrastructure investment.
The real impact of Take Back Tuesday
This year, the second of January was dubbed as ‘Take Back Tuesday’, as it was the first working day of the year and the first opportunity for consumers to return unwanted Christmas gifts. Although larger ecommerce businesses were prepared for the increase in returned goods, ParcelHero has stated this could lead to the eventual failure of smaller ecommerce brands.
According to new research from ParcelHero, there is an increasing expectation, especially from British consumers, for free returns. However, consumers aren’t aware of the impact this could have on smaller ecommerce businesses they love.
On the future the minister said: “There can be no doubt that the UK and Spain are united in our ambition for a brighter, more prosperous world for both our peoples […] we share a firm friendship that will only grow as we redefine our relationship with the European Union in the coming years.”
