CBI: UK SMEs growing strong | Qatar | DHL Customs Field Support

CBI trends survey: output and orders for Britain’s SMEs on the rise

The Confederation for British Industry (CBI) has released its latest SME Trends Survey covering April, May and June 2014. The findings show that orders and output have risen for the fourth consecutive fiscal quarter: 36 per cent of small and medium-sized manufacturers reported a rise in orders and 31 per cent of firms reported increased output. And business optimism continues to rise: 31 per cent of surveyed SMEs report they are more optimistic about their business situation than before.

To ensure that British business remains on this positive track for Q3, CBI’s Deputy Director General Katja Hall emphasised the importance of supporting SMEs, especially when it comes to exporting: “We need the Government to get behind our small and medium-sized manufacturers to help them to sell their products and services to new markets around the world, giving a sustainable boost to long-term growth.”

Quickening trade in Qatar

Roughly the size of Yorkshire and with a slightly larger population than Merseyside, constitutional monarchy Qatar has the world’s highest per capita GDP. Due to carefully managed economic growth and diversification fuelled by oil, Qatar is the highest-ranked Middle East country on the UN’s Human Development Index.

Ties between the UK and Qatar are strong. In 2013, UK exports to Qatar reached £1.46 billion and Qatar has approximately £22 billion in investments in UK projects; these include Barclays, London Stock Exchange and The Shard. The UK is also one of the most popular destinations for Qatari students pursuing their higher education abroad.
